HIC1015 and HIC1016 Hybrid IC Functions, Common Failures, and Modification Guide
The HIC1015 and HIC1016 are hybrid ICs commonly found in Toshiba CRT televisions. These ICs perform several important functions in the SMPS (Switch Mode Power Supply), including voltage regulation, protection, and auxiliary power supply control.
Main Functions of HIC1015 / HIC1016
- Acts as the error amplifier that regulates and stabilizes the SMPS B+ output voltage.
- Provides protection circuits including:
- Over Current Protection (OCP)
- Over Voltage Protection (OVP)
- X-Ray / EHT Protection
- Generates a regulated 9.5V auxiliary supply for the audio and video processing circuits.
- Controls the television Power ON/OFF operation.
The HIC1015 is designed for televisions with a 115V B+ supply, while the HIC1016 is intended for 125V B+ applications.
Pin Functions
Since the original datasheet is difficult to obtain, the following pin descriptions are based on practical observations during Toshiba television repairs.

Common Failure Symptoms
Based on repair experience, the most common failure of the HIC1015/HIC1016 is damage to the internal error amplifier.
When this happens, the SMPS can no longer regulate the B+ voltage correctly. In severe cases, the B+ voltage may rise to approximately 160V. Because the IC still activates the over-voltage protection circuit, the television usually powers on for a few seconds before returning to standby protection mode.
HIC1015 Error Amplifier Modification
The most common repair method is replacing the damaged internal error amplifier using a Sanken Error Amplifier (SE).
- Use SE115 for HIC1015 (115V B+).
- Use SE125 for HIC1016 (125V B+).
Modification Procedure
- Verify that the television can still be switched ON and OFF by the system control IC.
- If the HIC package is physically damaged (burned or cracked), replace the IC instead of modifying it.
- Remove the hybrid IC from the PCB.
- Cut or isolate Pin 3 before reinstalling the IC.
- Install the Sanken Error Amplifier as follows:
- SE Pin 1 → SMPS B+ output (positive terminal of the filter capacitor)
- SE Pin 2 → Feedback line
- SE Pin 3 → Ground (negative terminal of the filter capacitor)
- Install a 4.7kΩ resistor in parallel with the optocoupler LED (anode to cathode). On many Toshiba boards this location is marked as R881, although it is usually left uninstalled.
- Power on the television and verify that the B+ voltage is correctly regulated.

Possible Issues After Modification
During testing, no significant problems were encountered after performing this modification.
However, if the B+ voltage fluctuates without load, replacing the PC817 optocoupler (or an equivalent component) usually resolves the problem.
Total HIC1015 / HIC1016 Replacement
If the hybrid IC is severely damaged, the error amplifier modification may no longer be possible.
A complete replacement circuit can be built using:
- Sanken Error Amplifier (SE115 or SE125)
- KA78R09 voltage regulator
- Supporting resistors
- Power ON/OFF control circuit
Although this method restores basic functionality, it disables several original protection circuits. Therefore, a complete replacement is not recommended unless absolutely necessary.
Conclusion
